What to wear for your engagement shoot?

What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

(Because Looking Good Should Feel Effortless)

When it comes to your engagement shoot, what you wear matters more than you think. It’s not about dressing up like someone you’re not—it’s about choosing outfits that make you feel confident, relaxed, and like the very best version of yourselves. My goal? For you to look back at these photos and think, “We absolutely smashed it.”

Here’s my advice, served straight up

Why It Actually Matters

In a great photo, the focus should always be on you—your connection, your smiles, that quick glance between you when you think no one’s looking. Loud patterns, big logos, or wild colours have a bad habit of stealing the spotlight. And while I love a bit of drama, you want that drama coming from the way you two look at each other—not your shirt doing all the shouting.

How to Nail Your Engagement Shoot Style

Darker tones are your secret weapon
Deep, rich colours help the eye settle where it should—on your faces. Think navy, charcoal, forest green, earthy neutrals. They slim, they flatter, and they let the real magic shine.

Neutrals and soft pastels always win
Pale blues, muted yellows, creams, and soft beiges look gorgeous, especially out in nature or during that golden hour glow. They’re fresh without fighting for attention.

Say no to patterns, prints, and logos
Even tiny patterns can wreak havoc on camera, causing weird distortions that no one wants in their final gallery. Save the checks and florals for brunch, not your shoot.

White is gorgeous… if you’re smart about it
Crisp white shirts can look stunning, especially layered under a dark jacket. But head-to-toe white? It can bounce light in ways that hide all those lovely expressions we’re trying to capture. If in doubt, let’s chat it through based on where we’re shooting.

The Bed Test
Here’s a trick: lay everything out—shoes, socks, the lot. If your eye is drawn to one piece before anything else, it’s too loud. In a photo, the same thing happens. If everything blends harmoniously, you’re good to go. Easy.

Where We Can Shoot

At Home
If you want a super relaxed vibe (plus easy outfit changes and coffee breaks), your home can be the perfect backdrop. It’s where you’re most you, after all.

On Location
Your favourite park, a beach you love, the streets of your city, the spot where you had your first date—anywhere that means something to you. (And don’t worry about permissions; I’ll help sort that if needed.)

In a Studio
Want that clean, editorial, magazine-style look? Studio sessions are ideal. There’s a small hire fee, but you’ll get a ton of polished images thanks to perfect lighting and a setup designed to make you look your absolute best.
